Throat

also: the throat · throat-side

First in Wide Sky

The single authenticated door in or out of a reach — a chokepoint with no alternative.

In full

Where a whole region of space is reachable through one mouth, that mouth is the throat, and everything that enters or leaves passes it. A throat is surveyed once and rated thereafter, it has a side of the station given over to working it, and whoever holds it holds the reach. It is the reason a road-marker becomes a city: put the only door somewhere, and people stop beside it.

Key facts

  • One authenticated way in and out; no alternative route.
  • Rated and surveyed, with a transit time of record.
  • Stations grow at throats because everything must stop there.
  • Whoever controls a throat controls access to everything behind it.
