The child who first teaches Sarno the Drowned tongue in the village commons — corrects his drawn fish (not fish but háol, the specific river-fish), tows him to the fire "with the calm tyranny of the young," laughs at the shape of Eli in his mouth. The first real bridge between Sarno and the Drowned. Always at Wenna's hip; his dead father's fishing-spear stands oiled and unused by their door.
